Common Redshank
Chevalier gambette · Tureluur
The common redshank is instantly recognisable by its bright orange-red legs and bicoloured bill with a red base. In flight, the broad white wing bars are unmistakable. A breeding resident in the Vendée marshes, it is often the first to sound the alarm, its piping « tiu-liu-liu » call carrying across the salt meadows. It feeds on worms, small crustaceans and insects that it locates by sight on exposed mudflats.
